**Due to ongoing Social Distancing measures and the relocation of our Photography Area, we regret that we are unable to offer any sessions in 2021. Dates for next year will be announced in March 2022.**
Birds of Prey Photography Experiences
Whether you are a budding amateur or experienced professional, our photography experience allows you and your camera to get up close with some of our magnificent birds of prey in order to photograph them during the course of this session.
Taking place in a dedicated, private area of the Falconry Centre, you will be able to photograph a selection of birds throughout the morning, usually from a range of owls, hawks, falcons and even an eagle; the birds used will vary from session to session and we never guarantee exactly which birds will be used on a particular date.
Led by one of our falconers, you will start out with hot drinks and a short introduction. Set in a rural, secluded area in a natural setting, away from the regular visitor-accessible parts of the Centre, you will find a selection of birds sitting out on natural perches, such as tree branches, mossy stones and tree stumps - we even have a "barn", as you can see from this photograph of Oscar, a male Barn Owl! The bird's equipment is also as well-hidden and unobtrusive as possible.
The birds will remain on perches during the session; we will change the birds sitting out for different species during the course of the morning, approximately every half hour, allowing you to photograph a wider variety of species during your experience. We usually photograph approximately eight different birds during the course of the session.
The birds will be on static perches rather than flying, allowing you to photograph them from different angles under natural light conditions in a rural setting. A falconer will be on hand at all times to supervise the session and answer any questions you may have.
Frequently Asked Questions...
How often do you run the Experiences and how far ahead do I need to book a date?
The Photography Sessions are run on set dates throughout the year and can only be purchased online - a date is selected at the time of purchase. We recommend boking as soon as dates are made available to avoid disappointment. Further dates may be made available if sessions sell out; these will be announced on our Facebook page and added to this page as appropriate. Exclusive sessions may also be made available for small groups. To make an enquiry, please telephone us on 01562 700014 or use the Contact Us section of this website.
I have paid on-line, how long does it take to receive the booking confirmation?
We will email the booking confirmation to you within 2 days of the payment. Please check your Spam/Junk mail folders before contacting us if you have note received your booking confirmation.
Can I buy a gift voucher instead of booking a date?
Unfortunately it is not possible to purchase open-ended gift vouchers for this experience; a date must be selected at the time of purchase as dates and group sizes are strictly limited.
How many photographers are in a group?
We limit the number of Participants to a maximum of 8 for these sessions to allow everyone enough time and space to photograph the birds. Please note that there must be a minimum of 3 people booked on before we can run a session. We may be able to accommodate groups of up to 10 if you wish to book an exclusive session; please contact us for further details.
What if there are less than 3 people booked on a particular date?
If we do not have the minimum number of participants for a session, we may choose to cancel the session and/or rearrange it to another date. You will be offered the option of an alternative date or a refund as appropriate.
Can I bring someone with me?
Only those people who have paid to do the session will be permitted entry to the photography area. Anyone wishing to accompany you may either book onto the session as an additional participant in advance or remain at the Falconry Centre as a regular visitor (normal admission charges will apply).
What kind of camera should I bring?
These sessions are designed to be accessible to photographers of all skills and budgets. You will get the most from the session if you have a DSLR with a variety of lenses however as the birds will remain on static perches a bridge camera or other digital cameras with optical zoom should be sufficient. Please note that small pocket/compact cameras and smart phones will not be suitable!
Can I use flash photography?
The occasional use of flash is generally not a problem for our birds, but the session will take place outside in natural daylight. Excessive use of flash is not encouraged and you may be asked to consider adjusting your camera settings to compensate for low light rather than using a flash. Any birds showing signs of distress will be removed from the session immediately.
What clothing should I wear?
We recommend dressing appropriately for the weather. Photography sessions will be taking place in a separate section of the Centre not accessible to the general public; it is a grassy area with uneven terrain and may be muddy after damp weather, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
What happens if the weather is bad on the date of my experience?
We will run the experiences in most weather conditions - our birds generally enjoy sitting out and having a shower in the rain! Umbrellas are welcome and a gazebo may be provided in particularly heavy rain. In severe adverse weather we may rearrange the session to an alternative date of our choosing; if you cannot attend the alternative date please contact us to discuss your options.
I can no longer attend on the date I have booked - can I cancel it/rearrange the date?
As these sessions are run on set dates with limited places available, it is difficult to amend a booking once it has been made. If you cannot attend on the date you have booked, please telephone us on 01562 700014 to discuss this. Cancellations requiring a refund may be subject to an administrative fee of up to 20% of the purchase price.
